ART AND THE CITY: BERT SAMPLES

ART AND THE CITY: BERT SAMPLES

CONTRIBUTOR:
Jimmy Castillo, Civic Art + Design Collection/Project Manager

Houston artist Bert Samples painted Malcolm Marco Malcolm Marco (an elaborate, colorful, historically charged mural) in 1985 to grace the entrance of the original East End Lawndale Art Center. Fourteen years later, the building sold and Samples’ stunning piece was left homeless. After moving the large mural several times through the years—from his studio to a friend’s space to the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston’s storage facility—the piece has finally found a home in the newly renovated DeLuxe Theater.

In this installment of Art and The City, Samples takes Civic Art + Design Collection/Project Manager Jimmy Castillo through the artwork’s story. Have a listen!
